About Blacklock Covent Garden
Blacklock Covent Garden is a steak restaurant and chophouse on the corner of Bedford Street, one of a small London-born group that also has rooms in Soho, the City, Shoreditch, Canary Wharf, Manchester and Birmingham. The group was born from a love of the traditional chophouse, an institution established in the 1690s, and it keeps to that model: meat cooked on the bone over open coals, served without fuss and priced to be open to all.
The corner has its own history. The group points to the King's Coachmakers and the publishing house that launched Beatrix Potter as past occupants of this part of Covent Garden, a short stretch from the Apple Market and the Royal Opera House. The restaurant itself is in a basement, so there is no lift access; the Canary Wharf and Shoreditch branches are the step-free options in the group.
Steak restaurant in Covent Garden with Sunday roasts
The menu is built on bone-in chops and steaks, from Porterhouse and prime rib to bone-in sirloin and lamb rump, with fish such as Cornish dayboat monkfish appearing alongside. On Butcher Price Monday the big chops are sold at the price you would pay at a butcher, cooked to order and written up on the board. Sundays are given over entirely to roasts, with whole joints hung and roasted over the coals and served all day until the last seating at 8pm. Only the roast menu is served on Sundays.
What to expect on a visit
Service is quick enough for a pre-theatre meal: tell the team your curtain time and they will work around it. Online bookings are taken for up to eight people, larger parties by email, and a good amount of space is held back for walk-ins. Lunch runs to 3pm on weekdays with dinner from 4.45pm, and Saturdays are served straight through. Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Charing Cross stations are all within a few minutes. The only drawback is... it's really hard to make a reservation. It's because this place is too good👍 The culinary team made everything in perfect condition 👌 You know what, even the serving plates for sharing were hot, what a service💯 I was served by Jaidan, he recommended me the best to have from the starter, main course, sides dessert, last but not least, my favourite wines 😘. Overall, we had a really lovely meal at Blacklock Covent Garden. We ordered the cauliflower and the burger, and while the food took quite a long time to come out despite the restaurant not being full, the staff explained that the delay was because we had ordered the cauliflower. Once the food arrived, everything was very tasty and well worth the wait. Would definitely recommend.
Steakhouse located in the heart of Covent Garden. I Ordered an “Old Fashioned” cocktail at the bar. Somewhat Disappointing to discover that they are not freshly prepared to order, but are pre-mixed and poured straight from a bottle. Although, if you do ask the bar staff, they will make your cocktail to order. The food however, was a totally different matter. Mushroom toast and Pigs head on toast to start, which were both delicious. For main course we decided to order a 650g Prime Rib steak from the chalk menu, displayed on the wall. This lists all the steak cuts that are still available to order. Once they’ve sold out of any particular cut of meat, it’s simply crossed off the board. Side dishes we opted for the triple cooked fries, coleslaw and Parmesan kale. The steak was beautifully charred on the outside and pink on the inside, and just the right size for two people to share. Dessert had to be the White Chocolate Cheesecake. Unlike most restaurants that I’ve been to, the dessert portions are very generous and are spooned out at the table, right in front of you. Blacklock is definitely not the cheapest steak restaurant that I’ve ever been. However you get good food, which is of consistent quality and keeps people coming back.
