The Covent Garden Market Building

The Covent Garden Market Building stands at the centre of the Covent Garden Piazza and is one of London's most recognisable landmarks. The first written reference to the new market in Covent Garden dates from 1654, and after the Great Fire of 1666 the whole square was given over to fresh fruit and vegetables, making it London's largest market. The current Greco-Roman building followed in the late 1820s and today houses shops, stalls, cafes and restaurants.

In 1828 the Duke of Bedford secured a government bill for the improvement and regulation of Covent Garden Market, redeveloping the site with a proper market building and a regulated system of rents. Attractive as the design now seems, at the time it appeared functional and unadorned. Plans to demolish the area in the 1970s were stopped by a campaign from residents, and in 1980, after a five-year renovation, Covent Garden reopened as Europe's first speciality shopping centre. The estate is now managed by Shaftesbury Capital.

Inside, the arcades hold a strong fragrance and beauty line-up, including Chanel, Byredo, Penhaligon's, Miller Harris, Tom Ford and Parfums de Marly, alongside fashion and accessories from Aspinal of London, Strathberry, Cambridge Satchel, N.Peal and Happy Socks. Cafes and restaurants spill onto the terrace with views of the street performers and the Royal Ballet & Opera, from Ladurée and Caffè Concerto to SUSHISAMBA above, while Ben's Cookies, Venchi, Neuhaus and Santa Nata cover sweet treats. The building's covered halls are also home to the Apple Market and the East Colonnade Market.

What to expect on a visit

The estate lists general opening from 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 6pm on Sunday, with individual shops, stalls and restaurants keeping their own hours.
