About Le Beaujolais
Le Beaujolais has been pouring French wine on Litchfield Street since 1972, a quiet fixture on the border of Covent Garden and Soho, a short walk from Leicester Square and Seven Dials. It is a traditional French wine bar on the ground floor with a private members restaurant downstairs, and after more than fifty years of trading it counts as a genuine local institution.
The bar describes itself as strictly independent and old-school, and the wine list is exclusively and proudly French, built around terroir-driven bottles. Food follows the same logic: wine, cheese and charcuterie form the core, with the kitchen adding hot bistro favourites such as steak and croque-monsieur. It is a simple approach to French dining that keeps the focus on the glass and the company rather than on elaboration.

The room is rustic and candlelit, a small piece of France caught between Soho and Covent Garden, the sort of place regulars value precisely because it has changed so little. It suits a glass of terroir-driven wine before the theatre, a spontaneous lunch with friends, or a late-night glass with a little cheese after a long day in the city.
What to expect on a visit
The ground-floor bar is open to everyone. In the evening it is walk-in only and tables are first come, first served, so sharing a table is part of the experience. At lunch a few bookings are taken for groups of up to 14, with the rest of the tables kept for walk-ins, and the bar asks to be contacted directly for parties of five or more. Private events are not hosted because the owners prefer to keep the bar open to all. It opens from noon every day, closing at 23:00 Monday to Saturday and 22:00 on Sunday. The atmosphere at La Beaujolais was incredible! The mixed crowd was clearly having fun, with some people seated outside even in early spring. I sat at the bar and chatted with staff. The wine list was exceptional; we had a bottle of Poilly-Fusé, with chips and rillettes. The food menu covered dinner too with other dinners having a full meal. Reviews can’t really do this place justice. I cannot wait to come again.
What a gorgeous place! I’ve been just three times and now make excuses to go into Town just to be there. Gorgeous staff, gorgeous food and the best atmosphere. Long may this place live!
There is really nothing like catching up with two old friends at a place like Le Beaujolais. It has that cozy, French charm that makes the rest of London just disappear for a few hours. It was the perfect backdrop for a long overdue reunion. We shared a charcuterie and cheese board that was quite frankly the star of the whole evening. The spread was incredible! Rich rustic pâté, perfectly seasoned saucisson and a selection of cheeses that hit every note from sharp to creamy. Piling everything onto fresh, crusty baguette with those tiny, vinegary cornichons was absolute perfection. It is exactly the kind of food that keeps you reaching for "just one more bite" while you are deep in conversation. To wash it all down we had a Bordeaux wine that was to die for - the kind of bottle you immediately want to order another of... And we did! It was deep smooth and rounded out the meal beautifully. Between the food, the wine, and the great company it was a 5-star night through and through. I will definitely be heading back there as soon as I can. It is an absolute gem!!! 🇫🇷
