Charing Cross Road runs north from the area around Trafalgar Square towards Tottenham Court Road, forming the western boundary of the Covent Garden district. It has a long association with the book trade, and although the number of bookshops has fallen over the years, several dealers in new and second-hand books remain along its length, together with the specialist shops of Cecil Court which opens off its eastern side. The road is a major traffic route as well as a busy shopping street, carrying buses and vehicles through the heart of the West End. Along its course are theatres, cafes, music and instrument shops, and a mix of retail and commercial premises serving the constant flow of visitors. The Phoenix Theatre and other West End venues stand on or near the road, and it links directly to Leicester Square and Soho to the west. Buildings range from grand late-Victorian and Edwardian frontages to plainer twentieth-century blocks. Charing Cross Road remains one of the principal spines of this part of central London, valued both as a commercial artery and for the literary reputation that has clung to it for well over a century.
