Exeter Street in Covent Garden

Exeter Street lies in the southern part of Covent Garden, running in the block between the Strand and the streets leading up towards the piazza. It is a short, quiet street set back from the heavy traffic of the Strand, lined with a mixture of older buildings, small businesses and hospitality premises. The scale is modest, and the street has the enclosed feel typical of the lanes in this corner of the district, where the historic street pattern created a close grid of narrow ways. Exeter Street is best known today for a number of restaurants and food establishments that draw on the passing trade from the nearby Strand and theatre district. Its position gives quick access to the Savoy area, the riverside and the concentration of theatres along the Strand, while the market and piazza lie a short walk to the north. The street has long been part of the dining and service fabric of southern Covent Garden, and its present use continues that pattern, offering a quieter setting for eating and small trade away from the main visitor flows. It remains a useful and characterful connecting street within the wider district.
