Garrick Yard is a small yard set off Garrick Street in the western part of Covent Garden. Like the street it adjoins, it takes its name from the actor David Garrick, and it sits within the block close to the Garrick Club. The yard is a compact, enclosed space of the kind common in this district, where narrow openings off the main streets lead to small courts serving the surrounding buildings. It is quiet and largely given over to access and service functions rather than shopfronts, tucked behind the busier frontages of Garrick Street. Yards such as this are a survival of the older ground-level pattern of Covent Garden, where the space between the main thoroughfares was filled with a network of lanes, courts and working yards. Garrick Yard's interest lies chiefly in its position and its name, both tied to the theatrical history of the area and to the nearby club. It offers a small, secluded pocket a short step from the movement of the surrounding streets, close to St Martin's Lane and the theatre district to the west.
