Heathcock Court in Covent Garden

Heathcock Court is a narrow passage running off the Strand on the southern edge of Covent Garden. It is a small pedestrian court, tucked between the frontages of the Strand and leading back into the block behind, of the kind that survives in numbers along this old thoroughfare. The court is enclosed and quiet, serving as an access way and pedestrian route rather than a shopping street. Passages such as this recall the older ground plan of the area, where the space behind the main streets was reached through a series of narrow openings, courts and alleys. Heathcock Court's name is one of many curious survivals along the Strand, though the origin is best left unstated where it cannot be confirmed. Its position places it within easy reach of the theatres and hotels of the Strand and a short walk from Covent Garden piazza to the north. The court has little in the way of shopfronts, and its value lies in its survival as one of the small connecting ways that give this part of the district its layered, intricate character at street level.
