High Holborn forms the northern boundary of the Covent Garden district, a broad and busy thoroughfare running east to west between Holborn and New Oxford Street. It is one of the principal traffic routes of central London, carrying a heavy flow of vehicles and pedestrians, and it is lined with substantial commercial buildings, offices, shops and hotels. The scale of High Holborn is quite different from the narrow lanes of the market core to the south, with wide pavements and large frontages reflecting its role as a major artery. The street has a long history as an important route into the City, and its buildings span several periods of rebuilding. Along its length are offices, retail premises and hospitality serving the large daytime working population of the area. High Holborn marks the transition between Covent Garden and the districts of Holborn and Bloomsbury to the north, and it provides good transport connections, including Holborn Underground station at its eastern end. Its character is that of a working commercial thoroughfare, providing the northern frame to the quieter and more intricate streets of Covent Garden that lie behind it.
