Keeley Street in Covent Garden

Keeley Street in Covent Garden

Keeley Street sits on the eastern side of Covent Garden, close to the Aldwych and the boundary with Holborn. It is best known as the home of City Lit, one of London's largest adult education colleges, which occupies a substantial building on the street and draws students throughout the day and evening. This gives Keeley Street a working, purposeful character distinct from the retail and theatre trade of the market end of Covent Garden. The street is short and relatively quiet, with buildings of some scale in brick and stone housing offices and institutional uses alongside the college. Foot traffic here is steadier and more local than the visitor crowds nearer the Piazza, and much of it is tied to the comings and goings of learners and staff. Its position near Kingsway and the Aldwych ties it into the eastern approaches of the district, within reach of Drury Lane and the theatres to the south. Keeley Street is one of the streets where Covent Garden's role as a place of learning and work is more evident than its role as a visitor destination, a useful counterpoint to the busier market routes.
