Russell Street in Covent Garden

Russell Street runs east from Bow Street and crosses Covent Garden Piazza, linking the streets around the old market building to the theatre district beyond. It is one of the busiest walking routes across the Piazza, carrying visitors between the covered market halls and the streets to the east. The street passes close to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of London's oldest working playhouses, and forms part of the historic core laid out around Inigo Jones's seventeenth century square. Today Russell Street is lined with cafes, bars and shopfronts that serve the constant flow of theatregoers, market visitors and workers moving through this part of the district. Its position beside the Piazza gives it a steady footfall through the day and into the evening, when nearby theatres draw their audiences. The narrow pavements and closely set buildings keep the street enclosed and active, with much of its trade tied to the surrounding attractions. Russell Street remains a practical connector as much as a destination, joining several of the most visited spaces in Covent Garden along a single short line. Its character is shaped by the market on one side and the playhouses on the other, a mix of retail, refreshment and performance that defines much of the wider area.
