Strand Lane is a narrow passage running south from the Strand down towards the ground once occupied by the river's edge, tucked among the buildings and courts that fill the slope between the main road and the Embankment. It is a quiet, enclosed route, little used by through traffic and easily missed among the larger frontages of the Strand above. The lane is best known for the so-called Roman bath, a small tank of water long associated with the street, though its true age and origin are debated. The character here is that of a survival, a slice of older London geometry preserved between newer and taller blocks, with brick walls, service doors and the backs of surrounding buildings pressing close on either side. Foot traffic is light, made up mostly of the curious and of people cutting between the Strand and the streets below. Strand Lane offers a contrast to the busy thoroughfare it leaves, and its interest lies in its age and its odd, retiring position rather than in any shops or businesses along its short length.
