Tavistock Court in Covent Garden

Tavistock Court is a small court set close to the Piazza in the eastern part of the district, one of the tight pockets of space that thread between the larger streets around Covent Garden's central market. It is an enclosed and quiet spot, screened from the main flow of visitors by the buildings that surround it, and it carries the intimate scale typical of the old courts of the area. The setting is plain, with brick walls and the backs and sides of neighbouring premises defining its narrow bounds. Foot traffic is light and largely local, made up of those who reach it from the streets nearby rather than passing tourists. Tavistock Court takes its name from the Russell family, the Dukes of Bedford who developed much of Covent Garden and held the title Marquess of Tavistock. Its character rests on this quiet, tucked-away position near the animated market district, offering a small enclosed contrast to the crowds that fill the Piazza a short distance away.
