Adam Handling Chocolate Shop

Sustainable chocolate, finished in London

About Adam Handling Chocolate Shop

Adam Handling Chocolate Shop is the chocolate boutique of chef Adam Handling MBE, opened on Maiden Lane in spring 2025 a few doors from his restaurant group's Covent Garden base. The shop specialises in hand-painted, single-origin chocolates that are finished on site in central London, described by the team as little edible stories about the places they love. It is a small, chef-led counter rather than a grab-and-go sweet shop, and the quiet lane suits a slower browse.

Scottish-born Handling began his career at Gleneagles Hotel more than two decades ago and now runs the Adam Handling Collection, which includes Frog and Eve Bar on nearby Southampton Street, Ugly Butterfly and The Tartan Fox in Cornwall, and The Loch and the Tyne in Windsor. The chocolate shop applies the same thinking as his kitchens: work with like-minded makers, use pure and unblended chocolate that reflects the soil it grew in, and keep the finishing in British hands.

Hand-painted chocolate shop on Maiden Lane

The counter is built around hand-painted bonbons, sold individually or in a box of twenty-four, all made with single-origin chocolate and given a four-week shelf life rather than being built for long storage. The Foraged Collection ties each flavour to one of the group's sites, with woodruff and hazelnut for Frog in Covent Garden, raspberry, rose and pistachio for Ugly Butterfly on Fistral Beach, wild chamomile and peanut for The Tartan Fox, and cherry, meadowsweet and almond for Windsor. Bars include a 70% dark chocolate from Tela in Honduras with notes of cherry, redcurrant and plum, and there is hot chocolate for anyone who prefers to drink their cocoa.

What to expect on a visit

Opening runs Tuesday to Saturday from late morning, with Sunday and Monday closed, so plan a weekday or Saturday visit. Boxes make a straightforward gift for theatre-goers heading to the Strand or the Royal Opera House, and the online shop covers anything you cannot carry home. It sits among the dessert shops of Covent Garden, and for something frozen afterwards Amorino on Garrick Street is a short walk west. This is luxury British chocolate with a named chef behind it, which is still unusual in this part of London.

Adam Handling’s chocolate shop was recommended to me by a friend and I went and tried out their non-dairy hot chocolate and went for the 63%, while my friend chose the 72%. Both were incredible, rich, smooth, and exactly the kind of depth you expect from Adam’s team. You can taste the craft, the quality, and the care in every sip. A huge thank you to Malique. Truly kind, patient, and knowledgeable. He took the time to help us match spices and flavour pairings to our choices and made the whole experience even better. We had a genuinely lovely conversation, customer service like that stays with you. This place is special. I am definitely going to be coming back to try all the amazing chocolates and bakes they have to offer!

I had a great experience at Adam Handling Chocolate Shop. The chocolate selection was fantastic, with a wide variety of unique flavours to choose from, and the hot chocolate was one of the best I've ever had. The service was excellent throughout. Malique was incredibly patient, friendly, and happy to explain the different options, which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for something a little different from the usual chocolate shop, I would highly recommend a visit. The quality, creativity, and service make it well worth it.

Had this hot chocolate. It is definitely the best hot chocolate I have had in UK. The drink is not powdery and doesnt taste like other cafes. The mouthfeel is very smooth, the chocolate melts in your mouth as you are drinking it.
