Sticks'n'Sushi

Small house, big taste on Henrietta Street

About Sticks'n'Sushi

Sticks'n'Sushi is a Danish-Japanese restaurant on Henrietta Street, in the middle of Covent Garden's theatre quarter and a short walk from the Piazza, the Strand and Trafalgar Square. The group describes itself as a cross between a Japanese traditionalist and a Danish anarchist, and the menu follows that idea: creative and classic sushi on one side, grilled sticks from the yakitori-style grill on the other, with Japanese-inspired cocktails to go with them.

The building is part of the appeal. Henrietta Street was laid out in 1631 and named after the wife of Charles I, and the narrow house with the black facade, black door and wide marquee had been an Australian pub for years before the restaurant moved in. The walls inside were left raw and rustic, two fireplaces uncovered during the restoration were kept, and the old pale ale was replaced with sake and the house Yuzu Lemon Wheat Beer. The London group also has rooms in Soho, Shoreditch, Victoria and Chelsea.

Sushi restaurant in Covent Garden for pre-theatre and after

The kitchen pairs creative sushi with grilled sticks, rounded out with crisp salads and desserts, so a table can graze across both styles or settle on one. Vegetarian meals are welcomed on request for guests who prefer not to eat raw fish, and parties of thirteen or more are asked to pre-order so the chefs can prepare everything properly. Highlights listed by the restaurant include a bar, social dining, outdoor seating and a family-friendly welcome, and the group runs sushi masterclasses and private dining alongside the main room.

What to expect on a visit

Doors open at midday every day, with the kitchen closing an hour before the restaurant; note the annual staff day on 1 September when the restaurant is shut. Takeaway and delivery are available if you would rather eat at the hotel or at home. Henrietta Street is one of the calmer addresses this close to the market, which makes it a practical stop before a show at the Adelphi or the Lyceum.
