Long Acre is the main shopping street of Covent Garden, running east to west across the northern part of the district between Drury Lane and St Martin's Lane. It is one of the busiest streets in the area, and its length carries a dense run of shops and stores, from fashion chains to smaller independent traders, with Covent Garden Underground station standing at its junction with James Street. The street has a long commercial history, and it was once closely associated with the coachbuilding and later motor trade, when workshops and showrooms lined its frontages. That industrial past has given way to retail, and today the ground floors are almost entirely given over to shops, with offices and flats above. Long Acre is heavily used throughout the day, carrying both shoppers and the flow of people between the station, the Piazza and the streets to the north around Neal Street and Seven Dials. Its width and straight run make it a natural spine for the district, and it links many of the surrounding streets and courts. As the retail heart of the northern quarter, Long Acre is one of the defining streets of Covent Garden.
